Best spots to see sunrise in Madeira

I have been twice to Madeira, once during my Erasmus when I was working in a hospital and the second time for pre-wedding and wedding shooting. Madeira has a lot of beautiful spots to see sunrise or sunset. Also, it's reachable with a car!

Pico do Ariero

With many viewpoints, Pico do Arieiro is the third highest peak in Madeira. It's straightforward to reach it by road from Funchal, which takes about 40 minutes. At the end of the road, there is a free parking lot with an already stunning view. Arieiro is an ideal place for sunrise but also for sunset. Clouds during sunset are much lower.

I have two spots that I love there:

  1. A right track just after the parking lot
  2. Balcony - you need to go a bit further (left track), and after a few meters, you will see a wooden balcony on the right side

Ponta de São Lourenço

Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto is a terrific place for sunrise. After sunrise you can hit the road to Ponta de São Lourenço. You can park the car for free. Please don't go to that spot you see in the photo. It's hazardous! (It's not me in the picture, it was a random tourist).

Miradouro do Guindaste

It is also known as Crane viewpoint. A strongly whimsical place, indeed, like the entire east coast. However, a lot of photographers love it. Probably because during favorable conditions, it literally blows you out of your shoes. There is easy access to a place; park a car for free and then go a few meters where you can pose. It is not as dangerous as it looks (you stand far from the edge).

Seixal beach

Most of the time Seixal beach is full of people, so if you want to get a good shot, wake up early and go for sunrise there - you will thank me later.

You probably know Seixal beach mostly from drone shots, as we used to. But one day, we went here for sunrise, and we already know that it is one of the most beautiful spots on the island in the soft golden glow.
